Right now it’s hard to imagine a cultural re-evaluation for Twenty One Pilots, the way people who grew up in the ’00s eventually gave My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park (both obvious influences) their flowers. TB 最后的信全部使用大写，并且说“WE DESTROYED THEM SO THAT WE DIDN’T BECOME THEM”说明这封信写在 Clancy 的转变发生之后，像是 TB 对于刚刚成为统治者的 Clancy 的劝诫信。TB 用这封信告诫 Clancy 取得权力之后不要忘记人们和反抗者，不能重蹈覆辙，成为新的压迫者，必须比他们“做得更好”。
莽撞的、不承担责任的 Joseph 影像形象大概有出现在 pre-Trench 的 HDS 和 Heathens 里面，两支影片的影像包括歌词都在力劝别人远离他，因为他是恶人，是沉重而肮脏的。<Backslide>的 video 暗示 Joseph 接受了别人的付出（面包的象征）却不珍惜、任意舍弃，最后连基本的责任都不能履行。如果以上都不够直接，是在使用隐喻，这张专辑的<Center Mass>，Joseph 直接回顾了自己的童年创伤来自自己在五年级被好朋友怂恿下做的某件恶事，让他备感羞耻，见到同龄人抬不起头。显然这种害怕并不是虚构，对于 Joseph 是非常真实可感的。
这么理解的话，Clancy、Torchbearer、Nico 都是 Joseph 作为主角和创作者赋予的几个角色。Clancy 代表更纯洁、更本真的理想中的自己，他不会因为自己的创伤而去伤害别人，而是去反抗那些有权威的、让他受到压迫的人。Torchbearer 代表 Joseph 身边的向上力量，那些相信他、让他感觉有价值、但最终要被他辜负的人。Nico 是 Joseph 害怕和想逃离的自己，他极具伤害性、不负责任、喜欢欺骗。这个故事 cycle 开始于 Joseph 的形象在 Nico/Blurryface 的驱使下伤害、背叛朋友，最终的结局也是他弃善从恶，背叛朋友，归属了 Nico。颜色上，<Blurryface>是红，<Trench>是黄，代表纯真和希望，而<Clancy>和<Breach>重新回到了红。这是这个 cycle 的轮回。
Joseph 的形象能从 Clancy 变为 Nico，Banditos 能瞬间化为主教，当然是因为 Joseph 本来就是故事的创作者（“Destroy it if I want”）。但 Clancy 与 Nico 角色的界限模糊在<Overcompensate>里面就出现了。这首歌音色激进，Clancy 决定用极端手段（念力操控“glorious gone”）来对抗 Nico，手法其实跟 Nico 如出一辙，好像是放弃了道德观念，要从善滑向恶的一边。他外套上的红色胶带其实也象征这种改变和界限模糊。最终的斗争失败体现为 Joseph 不再是 Clancy 而是成为 Nico 也完全说得通，因为 Nico 从来就不是外部人物，这个斗争一直就是 Joseph 跟自己的斗争 (“Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat”）。Joseph 害怕 Nico 是因为怕自己成为他，而最终他最害怕的事情发生了，他真的成为了 Nico。
<The Contract>的 music video 最后出现的画面就隐讳表现了这种转变。Joseph 在与 Nico 的搏斗间进入头脑里面的幻想世界 – Dun 的角色递出红色胶带外套给 Joseph，但是 Joseph 却迟疑。video 里面 Joseph 对 Dun 说“I used to see / It felt so real / But now I plead / Just take the deal / I promised you a contract”，Joseph 承诺过自己会跟 Banditos 并肩作战、把德玛城烧毁（即“The Contract”），但在当下他的想法已经改变，就好像歌词表达出的他发现自己已经做不到过去承诺的事情。“just take the deal”可以理解为 Clancy 最终化身 Nico 后让 Torchbearer 成为他的副手 Keons 的邀约，但是 Torchbearer 不会接受这个妥协版本的“约定”。
这个画面也是在为 music video 里面最终的背叛做出铺垫。Dun 回绝了红袍，就如同 Joseph 之前回绝了 Clancy 的红胶带外套 – 因为他对于这个身份已经不再认同，他可能看到这件外套会觉得自己是一个骗子，一个 fraud。粉丝期待的 Clancy-bear 在夕阳下手挽手一起离开 Dema 的完满结局是一个 myth，Joseph 在歌词里面提醒说“I’m wondering what you thought would happen, who you thought I would be”，Joseph 在成为 Clancy 之前是 Blurryface 的化身，Blurryface 也是他身份里面的一部分。他最终还是会回到 cycle 的开始，再度归属于 Blurryface。而且 Clancy 在这里的行为其实是能够做出的最严重的欺骗行为 – 他让所有人以为他是在击败恶魔，让别人以为他是英雄，他真正想要做的却是截然相反的。在 Banditos 快要进入的时候，他随手把窗帘拉下裹在身上，要让自己成为 Nico 的形象，看起来非常任性、不负责和孩子气，与 Clancy 应该有的品格和形象完全不同，让人感觉非常惊讶。但如果考虑到 Blurryface 本来就是 Joseph 在故事里面的人物形象的核心，这其实也不奇怪。
第二首<RAWFEAR>的歌词好像很重复，旋律是轻快的，但是谈的内容却比较深刻和严肃。讲的应该是 Joseph 意识到一个人内心的未加审视的恐惧（歌词把它描述成“不存在的冲锋枪响”）是一个人的原始驱动力，让人一刻不停地跑下去。Joseph 说这种深层恐惧不能被治愈，也没有成功或者失败，审视这种恐惧是一个痛苦的长期过程。最后歌词说“希望她的父母能不再大声叫喊”点出了歌词里的原始恐惧就是歌曲背景当中不断出现的叫喊声。一些人猜测这里的“她”指的是他老婆 Jenna Joseph，但这其实不太可能（会对她父母不尊敬）。更有可能的解释是，他目击了一个女孩的经历而写下了这首歌。
从更大的背景来理解，这首歌可能是在继续探讨他“恐惧的究竟是什么”及“来源是什么”，以及怎么应对他害怕应对的东西。Blurryface 这个人物代表的是 Joseph 的负面情绪，负面的人格特质，所害怕发生的事情，等等。Joseph 在这首歌里面的答案可能是更慢、更加不慌忙地应对和理解这些情绪。
<Drum Show>是有关于 Josh Dun 对音乐的热爱的一首颂歌。写的是 Josh Dun 在结束一天繁重工作以后，开车时只要打开汽车音响就止不住地跟着节奏用手指击打方向盘，就如同在做击鼓表演一般 – 同时也是表达出 Dun 在加入乐团之前没有找到人生方向的一段经历（“stuck between a rock and a home”）。歌曲和 MV 好像在暗示成为一个鼓手是 Josh Dun 的归宿，而他加入 twenty one pilots 乐团是找到了他的人生目标和人生价值。
<The Contract>讲的是焦虑，还有强烈的 paranoia 甚至强迫行为（检查门窗、拉下窗帘），不安行为（不停想外面是否天亮，在室内不断踱步），以及因为没有做到自己承诺过的事情而感觉愧疚。最突出的歌词应该是“I have a feeling that necromancer’s outside, and I’m just trying to stay quiet.”（我感觉到亡灵法师就在门外，我只想不出声地在这里待着），用非常具体的画面表现出强烈的妄想偏执。在结尾，叙述者回想过往自己的勇气（开场曲？），但在现在只想缴械投降，不再去跟他头脑中的黑暗形象对抗。歌词里面的“contract”更像是在跟对方投降时签下的合约。从专辑的叙事里面，开场曲当中主角表现出很强的自信和勇气，跟这里表达出的脆弱和偏执产生很大对比。尽管他曾经信心满满地说这场战役就是终战，但看来结局可能还是不明朗，他再次被打败了。
<Downstairs>重复了消极状态的叙事，这是一首慢节奏但是副歌被反复播放的歌曲（副歌其实被重复了六遍，到后面感觉有点催眠的意思。如果 Brad Taste 还健在的话他应该会嘲讽这首歌吧…）歌词里面 Joseph 似乎是在对神或者是某个更高级的人物寻求宽恕，以及他觉得躲在地下室会更舒服，因为在这里他可以逃避自己无法控制的情绪波动（“the weather I wear, all of my heart on my sleeve”）。他贬低自己是“nothing”，是“rundown”，他对自己感到羞耻，想遮蔽自己的脸。
Joseph 在这首歌直白地回顾两件让他感到受到创伤的事情。第一件事情是他五年级因为好朋友教唆他做某件事情（可能是恶作剧之类的），最后他朋友在校车上面被揭发，他感到很羞愧，好像“哈飞自行车的链子掉了”，但是还是只能继续走回家，这件事情让他之后不敢正视公园里面的小孩。第二件事情是他觉得自己把一个重要的人（这个人让他感觉到了个人价值，会不会是<Legend>里面提到的 grandfather Robert？）当成理所应当的，参加完他的葬礼以后他感觉到“一切都回不去了”。
如果把这种声讨行为放到现在又可以想到他之前开“platform shoes”玩笑结果被集体声讨的事情。嗓音变软变弱的形容也可以跟他们的音乐专辑自从<SAI>以后风格放软做对照（从某个角度理解，<SAI>有一些曲目是有关于被 cancelled 的恐惧）。因为害怕发言被声讨所以不敢做真实的表达，而因为幼年的经历，可能 Joseph 会更加害怕自己做了什么被声讨。
这个角度去理解副歌的话，Joseph 其实是在说，别人问他作为一个有名气的艺人是怎么安然无恙地生活的，而即便别人会因为他有成功的光环，而对他有更高的期待，但是 Joseph 关于应对方式的答案却显得很卑微和可怜：他对于大众的过度关注和可能发生的集体声讨的应对办法就是“拉起袖子遮住手和脸，把手臂贴紧身体，让自己变得尽量地小，从而避免被攻击” – 尽量遮蔽自己，缩小自己的存在，更少地表达自己，不再在社交媒体上发个人内容，或者尝试写搞笑的内容。
我觉得这首歌的坦诚程度可能超过了以往其他作品。歌曲没有使用隐喻或者 Dema 的故事和人物，而是回顾了两件让他感觉到难以忘记而且产生强烈创伤的事件。Twitter 上有粉丝说听了泄露的专辑以后说 Tyler Joseph 的精神状况很让人担心，现在想的话可能跟这首歌有关。
Joseph 在<Days Lie Dormant>加快了节奏，这首歌的感情让我觉得好像是悲愤的。虽然是消极情绪，但是听起来很强烈。歌词说他为了追求自己的目标，不可避免地要跟某人分离，去一个没有人认识这个人的地方。尽管这个人鼓励他去追求自己的目标，说自己没事，但是 Joseph/主角察觉到他们内心的难受不舍。Joseph 发现自己在离开他们以后，自己的人生似乎止步不前，让他感觉自己追求的事业好像不那么重要了。可能是这种被拉扯、矛盾的两难情绪让歌曲里面的情绪这么激烈。
这首歌在现实背景下听起来像有一种道别的意思。在乐团前景不明确的情况下，这首歌的歌词可以理解为 Joseph 想把生活的重心放在家庭生活上 – 这首歌好像是在预示一个时期的结束。最突出的歌词应该是“My days lie dormant, frozen and distorted, robbed of my momentum and suspended in the air.”以及“don’t make me waste my love. It’s everything I’ve got.”
